The Trump administration has filed an appeal against court rulings that blocked its tariff policies, warning these decisions disrupt ongoing international trade negotiations. Officials stress that the rulings undermine the president’s authority and threaten U.S. economic strategy.

The legal challenge began when two toy companies sued over the tariffs, leading a federal judge in Washington, D.C., to rule the president lacks the unilateral power to impose such broad economic measures.

Judge Rudolph Contreras agreed with an earlier ruling from the Court of International Trade but limited his decision. He only blocked tariff enforcement for the companies involved in the lawsuit rather than issuing a comprehensive ban.

Shortly after, a federal appeals court temporarily stayed the trade court’s broader decision. This gave the Trump administration time to mount a legal defense and maintain leverage in sensitive trade negotiations.

In its filing on Monday, the Justice Department criticized the district court ruling, calling it flawed and harmful to the credibility of U.S. trade policy. Officials argued that the tariffs remain an essential bargaining chip.

The administration also contended that Judge Contreras lacked jurisdiction, asserting that trade disputes should be resolved in the Court of International Trade. They warned that ongoing judicial interference could jeopardize critical global trade agreements.
